Check ICE Detainee Releases

To find someone released from the ICE detention network, use the federal civil-immigration locator only when immigration custody is documented or reasonably supported by the official record. The ICE detainee release search is separate from an RSW Regional Jail search and from state or federal prison records. A transfer out of RSW can end local custody while detention continues elsewhere. The reverse is also true: a missing ICE result does not prove community release. Identity details, timing limits, intake delays, and the specific receiving agency all shape the correct follow-up.

ICE Release Record Scope

ICE administers a national civil immigration detention network. No dedicated ICE facility was identified within Rappahannock County. More importantly, the reviewed official material does not establish RSW Regional Jail as an ICE contract detention center. The ICE pathway belongs only in a case where a release record, court paper, or other reliable source points to immigration custody.

An RSW entry stating transfer to ICE means local jail custody ended and federal civil detention may have begun. It is not release to the community. ICE may later release a person on immigration parole or another condition while proceedings and reporting duties continue. That event is also different from criminal parole, VADOC probation, or federal supervised release.

Search the ICE Locator

The Online Detainee Locator System, or ODLS, provides two main search routes. An A-number search needs the nine-digit number and country of birth. Add leading zeroes when the known A-number has fewer digits. A biographical search uses the exact first and last name with country of birth, and date of birth can refine the result.

  1. Confirm the person's adult status and gather the A-number or exact biographical details.
  2. Use the A-number and country of birth when available because it is more precise than a name.
  3. For a biographical search, enter the exact first and last name and country of birth, then add date of birth if known.
  4. Record the date, result wording, and any facility or contact direction shown.
  5. If no result appears, call ICE and return to the RSW or other agency record that identified the transfer.

ICE says ODLS covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days, subject to exclusions and intake lag. It does not display people younger than eighteen. Those limits mean that a database miss is not proof that detention ended.

Important: Never convert an ODLS no-result into a claim of release; use a positive record or direct agency confirmation.

ICE Detainee Information Contact

The Detention Reporting and Information Line is the documented fallback when the online result is absent or unclear. ICE lists service Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Have identity details ready, along with the last known custodian, date of the possible handoff, and any A-number found in the person's documents.

Ask a narrow status question. If RSW recorded a transfer, provide the date and request help identifying the current facility or lawful next contact. If ICE confirms release, preserve the exact status and date. Immigration paperwork held by the person or counsel may be stronger for the terms of release than a short public locator result.

The ICE attorney information resources explain official access routes and locator limits. A person seeking legal advice about an immigration case should use qualified counsel or an authorized legal service; a custody locator supplies status information, not legal interpretation.

Rappahannock ICE Boundary

No official evidence reviewed shows that RSW is an ICE contract detention facility. That negative finding controls the wording. ICE should not be inserted into every Rappahannock County release account, and a local booking should never be called immigration detention without a supporting record. The county has no identified dedicated ICE site.

When a specific RSW transaction names ICE, treat it as a documented handoff. Ask through the official RSW records route for the receiving authority and time. Then use ODLS and the information line. If the transaction names another jail, VADOC, the Marshals, or another custodian, follow that system instead. The destination field prevents a broad federal search from replacing the facts of the case.

Immigration detainer
A documented request or legal basis tied to immigration custody; its effect must be checked in the actual record.
Civil detention
ICE custody connected to immigration proceedings, distinct from a criminal sentence.
Immigration parole
A form of conditional release from ICE detention, not criminal parole.
Transfer
A handoff between custodians in which confinement may continue.

ICE Release Result Meaning

A positive recent-release result can support the conclusion that ICE detention ended on the stated terms and date. It does not decide the immigration case or show that all reporting duties ended. A person may remain in proceedings after physical release. The paperwork should be checked for conditions, future appearances, and the agency responsible for further contact.

A no-result has several possible explanations. The person may be newly admitted and not yet visible, excluded from the public tool, outside the released-record window, held by a different agency, or entered under details that do not match the search. Misspellings, hyphenated names, multiple surnames, and an incorrect country of birth can also defeat a biographical query. Repeat only with supported variants.

When the central question begins with a disappearance from RSW, return to the local record. The RSW current locator is not a historical release feed, so absence there proves little. A focused booking-and-release request should ask whether the event was release to the community or transfer and should request the receiving agency where releasable. Then ICE becomes relevant only if that answer supports it.

Adult ICE Search Limits

ODLS does not show people under eighteen. A child's absence from the locator is therefore built into the published coverage, not evidence of release. Juvenile immigration cases and Virginia juvenile detention records have separate access limits. Do not enter a child's identity into an adult released-inmate workflow or merge a juvenile matter with the adult RSW record path.

Rappahannock's juvenile service arrangement is also separate from ICE. State materials point to Loudoun Juvenile Detention Center for the county's Virginia juvenile detention service. That does not establish immigration custody, and the similarly named Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center in Stafford serves other jurisdictions. Adult and juvenile boundaries must stay intact at each step.

For an adult, an A-number is the strongest ODLS search key. It is not the same as a seven-digit VADOC number, BOP register number, court case number, or RSW booking number. Keeping these identifiers labeled prevents a no-result caused by searching the wrong system.

ICE Versus Criminal Custody

ICE detention is civil immigration custody. RSW is a regional criminal-justice jail. VADOC runs state prisons and community corrections. BOP operates federal prisons for federal sentences, while the United States Marshals Service handles many federal defendants and transports. Each system confirms only its own status.

RSWName, birth date, booking numberBooking-and-release transaction
VADOCSeven-digit DOC IDLocator and release documents
BOPRegister or other federal numberHistorical locator and federal record
ICENine-digit A-number plus countryODLS, phone line, and immigration papers

The Rappahannock County release search starts with the known custodian and follows a documented transfer. That approach avoids claiming that a person is free merely because one system no longer lists them. Note: The research deliberately found no support for an RSW ICE-contract claim.

Confirm an ICE Release

Use a positive hierarchy of proof. Immigration release documents or direct ICE confirmation are strongest. A current ODLS result that expressly reports a recent release is useful corroboration. An RSW transfer entry establishes the handoff but not ICE's later outcome. A court or news report may provide context but should not replace the custody source.

Record the full name searched, A-number when known, country of birth, query date, and exact result language. If a facility is named, use its official contact details. If the result says released, review the person's papers for conditions and later reporting. If nothing appears, describe the result only as “not shown” and keep the outcome unconfirmed until an official source resolves it.

This wording protects the most important factual line. Released to the community means a custodian positively recorded that outcome. Transferred means custody continued or may have continued with a named receiving authority. Not shown means the available public search did not answer the question.
